Authored Books vs Chapter in an Edited Book

There are two types of formats for referencing a book:

  1. An authored book.

This is where the whole book has same author or authors.

If this is the case, then you reference the book as a single source regardless of how many different chapters you use.

See examples Authored Book.

 2.   As a chapter in an edited book.

This when a book has an editor or editors who have compiled the book, but the majority of the chapters are written by contributors not the editors whose names are on the cover of the book. If this is the case, you need to reference each chapter as a separate source.

See examples in the Book - Chapter in an edited book section.

How can you tell the Difference?

Ideally the introductory pages in the front section of the book will identify that the names on the cover of the book are editors, however this is not always the case.

Note the introductory page can include the following: front matter, title page, copyright page, about the editors or authors, forward, preface and contributors.

Use the following principle to guide you:

"If the majority of the chapters are not written by the names on the cover of the book then use the referencing format a chapter in an edited book".
