Flickr

Flickr is an American image and video hosting service. It has been a popular platform for amateur and professional photographers to host high-resolution photos since 2004.

A good proportion of images hosted there are licenced under Creative Commons and are free to download and use in education.

You will need to sign up with an email address to access and download from the website,

Sponsored contents will be displayed before your search results. Do not take any of the sponsored images.

  • After signing in to flickr, search by entering keyword(s) into the search box and hit Enter.
  • You can then click on the Any license dropdown menu to filter your results to only Creative Commons licenced works.

Flickr search

  • Scroll through the search results and select an image to view its information.
  • Check that the licence suits your needs by clicking on the "Some rights reserved" link, eg. if you need to make modifications, you can't use one that says No Derivative.

  • Click on the download icon and select the appropriate resolution for your use.
  • Capture the name of the creator, the URL of the image page and the URL to the CC licence page to attribute the image in your resource.

The following information is required when attributing an image from Flickr.com:

  • Name or pseudonym of the creator 
  • Title of the image
  • Details of the licence and provide a link to the licence
  • URL of the image and the website it was found.
